How to Remove a Password from a PDF (When You Know It)
To remove a password from a PDF, open it in an unlock tool, enter the password you normally use to open it, and download the unlocked copy. The new file opens in any reader without a password, and printing and copying restrictions are removed too. You need to know the password: legitimate tools remove known passwords, they don’t crack forgotten ones.

FaaTools Unlock PDF decrypts the file in your browser, so the document and its password are never uploaded. That matters, because the PDFs people lock are usually bank statements, payslips, tax forms and IDs.
- Open Unlock PDF and add the locked PDF.
- Type the password you use to open it. Passwords are case-sensitive, so check Caps Lock.
- Click Unlock PDF. The tool checks that the new file opens without a password.
- Download the unlocked copy and keep the original somewhere safe if you still need a protected version.
Common password formats
Banks and employers often build the password from your details, such as your date of birth (DDMMYYYY), the last digits of your account number, or part of your name. Check the email or letter that came with the file.
Open password vs owner password
| Password | What it does | What to enter |
|---|---|---|
| Open (user) password | Needed to view the PDF at all | The password you type to open it |
| Owner (permissions) password | Blocks printing, copying or editing | The owner password set by whoever locked it |
If your PDF opens without a password but won’t let you print or copy, it only has an owner password. Unlock PDF removes those restrictions when you enter that owner password.
Other ways to remove a PDF password
- Google Chrome: open the PDF, enter the password, then press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on Mac) and choose Save as PDF. The saved copy has no password, but links and form fields may be lost.
- Mac Preview: open the PDF, enter the password, go to File → Export as PDF and make sure Encrypt is unticked.
- Adobe Acrobat Pro: File → Properties → Security, set Security Method to No Security and save. This needs a paid Acrobat subscription.
The print-to-PDF trick works in a pinch, but it re-creates the document and can drop bookmarks, links and fillable fields. A real unlock keeps the file exactly as it was, minus the encryption.
What if you forgot the password?
Modern PDFs use AES-256 encryption, which can’t practically be broken. Ask whoever sent the file for the password or a new copy. Banks and employers can usually resend statements and payslips. Only remove passwords from documents you own or have permission to change.
