Sales Tax & VAT Calculator FAQ
How do I add sales tax to a price?
Multiply the price by the tax rate ÷ 100 to get the tax, then add it. $100 at 8.25% tax is $8.25 tax, for $108.25 total.
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the tax-inclusive price by (1 + rate ÷ 100). £120 including 20% VAT is £120 ÷ 1.2 = £100 net, with £20 VAT.
Why can’t I just subtract the percentage?
Because the tax was calculated on the smaller net price. Subtracting 20% from £120 gives £96, which is wrong. The correct net price is £100.
